IP Telephony Design -- While many telephone system suppliers are beginning to provide some sort of IP component to their offering, FacetPhone was designed from the ground up as an IP-PBX. FacetPhone is inherently ready for branch office and telecommuter calls over the Internet, without the expensive IP upgrade add-ons required from traditional suppliers. The modular architecture using external IP telephony gateways also allows much greater scalability than the competing architecture that reaches limits on the number of telephone cards that can be put in the computer chassis. In addition, physical phone line and phone extension changes may be implemented without bringing the phone system down.

Linux / UNIX -- FacetPhone's reference and recommended server platform is Linux or UNIX. Due to its history of high reliability, robust performance, excellent scalability, and good value, we believe Linux / UNIX is a better operating system upon which to base this business critical application. Virtually all the competing products are based on Windows. Some VARs for these Windows based PBXs even advise their customers to reboot their PBXs on a regular basis to avoid crashes!

Application Interface -- FacetPhone includes interfaces to both Windows and UNIX (& Linux) applications. For Windows applications, the Microsoft Telephone Application Programming Interface (TAPI) is used. For UNIX applications, we have defined a UNIX Telephone Application Programming Interface (UTAPI) so that UNIX applications may interact with the telephone system. The large number of software publishers of UNIX-based applications do not generally have this capability today. The new capability for their application to dial out from their customer database, or automatically pull up customer records from callerID information is an important competitive advantage. The UTAPI interface is a simple and straight forward protocol. Application developers are able to take advantage of this telephony interface with minimal changes to their software. Do you want to learn more about UTAPI?

Strong Internet Integration for Branch Offices and Telecommuting -- FacetPhone enhances and encourages a mobile work force. Whether an employee is in their primary office, a branch office, or a home office, they get all of the FacetPhone features, and will continue to be “connected” to their company. Remote phones that are connected into FacetPhone over the Internet simply appear and act as any other phone extension on the system.

Presence & Availability Management -- Using the graphical user interface on the PC, FacetPhone provides an instantly informative display of which employees are available, on the phone, busy, at lunch, out of town, etc. Users may "see" the availability status of people within a department, the entire company, or any other group the administrator allows.

Enterprise Instant Messaging -- Instant messaging, or text chat, can be conducted between two or more users logged into FacetPhone. This feature is particularly handy for those quick co-worker communications where you don't want to intrude with a phone call, or wait for an email response.

FacetWin Support -- FacetWin has been enhanced to include the FacetPhone UTAPI support. So application developers who run their solution with FacetWin will not have to make any software changes in order to dial out of their application with FacetWin. The user simply highlights the number on the screen they wish to dial, and then right clicks the mouse for the dial option. Or, the user may quickly predefine fixed fields on the screen for one click dialing without the need for highlighting a phone number.
