FacetWin Security Pack Announced

22 February 2001

FacetCorp (Plano, TX, USA) has announced a new supplement to FacetWin Version 3 to provide customers with secure terminal emulation sessions over the Internet and corporate networks. The FacetWin Security Pack is available for immediate ordering and will begin shipping to customers by March 7th.

Before this release, only passwords were encrypted, and FacetWin customers would either have clear text emulation sessions over the Internet, or would set up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to achieve private sessions. Users of other secure emulation products were required to purchase relatively expensive client software for each user and to install and configure their servers with SSH or some other secure software. FacetWin is the only terminal emulator that is client/server based, and therefore already has the required UNIX server component installed. And, FacetWin Security Pack is available free to existing customers under FacetWin maintenance; or may be purchased by customers previously not under maintenance for a single 15% charge over the price of their standard FacetWin license.

FacetWin is the all-in-one Windows to UNIX integration solution that is priced like a single feature product. FacetWin features include terminal emulation, CIFS-based file services, bi-directional printer services, PC backup, Internet modem server, PC agent, and Simple Sign-On (SSO), all managed through a Windows administrator.

The FacetWin Security Pack provides full 56-bit DES (Data Encryption Standard) encryption for both login/passwords and the complete emulation conversation session. Each new emulation session encrypts differently based on a unique seed used for each conversation. Since FacetWin already has a server component installed, there is no need for the customer to install and/or configure a new security package on the server. In addition, FacetWin’s client/server implementation allows for use of the highly secure manual key exchange, as well as a fast and efficient encryption/decryption process.

“Adding the FacetWin Security Pack feature was simply driven by customer requirements,” said Paul Vance, vice president & general manager for FacetCorp. “As more and more FacetWin customers began using the terminal emulator over the Internet, they were naturally concerned about the privacy of their employees’ emulator conversations. Larger corporations are also beginning to use this capability on their local and wide area networks.” Jay Anderson, president of Complete Computer Solutions, a FacetWin reseller said, “We have been using a beta version of the FacetWin Security Pack for several months now, and it works great. It’s not just a good idea over the Internet, it’s a good idea in most offices where clear text passwords could be obtained with any of the freely available network sniffers. Many of our customers are looking for this type of solution as an easier and cheaper alternative to a VPN.”

Availability and Ordering

Customers may place their orders now by contacting FacetCorp (www.facetcorp.com), or one of their authorized resellers. Shipments are scheduled to commence within two weeks. The FacetWin Security Pack is an optional add-on to FacetWin. Pricing is as follows:

FacetWin Feature Summary

FacetWin is the all-in-one Windows to UNIX integration solution that is priced like a single feature product.

Terminal Emulation: FacetWin includes world-class terminal emulation for UNIX. The terminal emulation in FacetWin includes the unique Window WatchTM and QuickLaunchTM features as well as the Simple Sign-OnTM (SSO) feature that optionally gives the user UNIX file/print services and terminal emulation access, all from their single network login.

File Services: FacetWin provides CIFS-based file services such that Windows users have completely transparent access to UNIX disk drives. Access is provided either through mapped drive letters or network browsing.

Print Services: FacetWin allows Windows users to access any UNIX printer directly from their Windows application. The product also lets UNIX users and applications print to PC printers.

PC Backup & Restore: Allows the system administrator or individual PC users to backup PC files to a UNIX system on the network. This feature supports full or incremental backup, backup to tape or disk, backup of multiple PCs in a single operation, backup to multiple tapes and tape drives, large files support (> 2GB), and data compression. This includes an Explorer-type user interface for easy file selection for backup or restore.

Internet Modem Server: Allows PC users to access a pool of modems on the Unix server(s) to provide Internet access without requiring a separate phone line and modem for each PC.

PC Agent: The FacetWin PC Agent is a graphical user interface providing an important messaging system to allow system administrators and users to quickly and easily communicate with each other. In addition, it allows the user to manage their settings for PC backup, the Internet modem server, and set their default UNIX file permissions.

Email Server: FacetWin includes a POP3 server that allows email to be moved between UNIX and Windows mail systems. This means users can use any POP3 compliant mail client they prefer.

Graphical Administration: Comes with Windows-based administration client including context sensitive help to allow for easy configuration of file and printer sharing, and all other features.
