FacetCorp Announces Support for IBM AIX 5L on Power Processors and Intel Itanium Architecture

FacetWin to be Made Available on IBM eServer xSeries and pSeries systems

15 March 2001

FacetCorp (Plano, TX, USA) today announced early availability of its FacetWin software product on AIX 5L, the new version of IBM's robust UNIX operating system for Power and Intel Itanium platforms. At the same time, FacetCorp announced early availability of FacetTerm on AIX 5L for Intel Itanium platforms. The porting of these packages to AIX 5L enables organizations using powerful IBM eServer systems to take advantage of FacetCorp's leading Microsoft Windows to UNIX integration software. This is especially important to eBusinesses and other customers with a requirement to seamlessly run both UNIX and Windows applications.

"IBM solutions are designed to provide agile businesses with the flexibility, availability and performance necessary to run the latest applications. More often than not, this means providing a platform for a multi-operating system environment. FacetCorp is a valued partner with a powerful set of UNIX/Windows integration software and we expect our combined solution to be beneficial to our many customers," said Mike Kerr, vice president of product marketing, IBM Web Server.

FacetWin is the all-in-one Microsoft Windows to UNIX software integration solution that is priced like a single feature product. FacetWin features include terminal emulation, CIFS-based file services, bi-directional printer services, PC backup, Internet modem server, PC agent, and Simple Sign-On (SSO), all managed through a Windows-based administrator. The ability to transparently store Windows data files, programs, and user profiles on UNIX systems increases user productivity, expands user storage capacity, secures user data with increased availability, increases group productivity, and saves administrator time.

FacetWin is available on IBM UNIX systems and is the primary Windows to UNIX integration solution for IBM's Intel-based NUMA-Q servers. FacetWin is sold and supported directly by IBM, and is used in-house by the company at its facility located in Beaverton, Oregon.

Jim Bryant, FacetCorp President said, "Porting and releasing FacetWin and FacetTerm for AIX 5L was an obvious decision for us. UNIX on Power and Intel have always been strong platforms for us. The availability of these important middleware products on AIX 5L will help provide a smooth migration for customers."

FacetTerm distributes the power of UNIX by allowing PC and character terminal users to run up to ten simultaneous applications when connected to a UNIX host. Users can hot-key from one session to another without having to stop work in progress. For those customers still using character-based applications on UNIX, FacetTerm provides an incredible boost to productivity, usually paying for itself in only one to two weeks. FacetTerm works with all IBM UNIX systems, and all other UNIX systems, and is compatible with virtually all character-based UNIX applications.

FacetWin Feature Summary

FacetWin is the all-in-one Windows to UNIX integration solution that is priced like a single feature product.

Terminal Emulation: FacetWin includes world-class terminal emulation for UNIX. The terminal emulation in FacetWin includes the unique Window WatchTM and QuickLaunchTM features as well as the Simple Sign-OnTM (SSO) feature that optionally gives the user UNIX file/print services and terminal emulation access, all from their single network login.

File Services: FacetWin provides CIFS-based file services such that Windows users have completely transparent access to UNIX disk drives. Access is provided either through mapped drive letters or network browsing.

Print Services: FacetWin allows Windows users to access any UNIX printer directly from their Windows application. The product also lets UNIX users and applications print to PC printers.

PC Backup & Restore: Allows the system administrator or individual PC users to backup PC files to a UNIX system on the network. This feature supports full or incremental backup, backup to tape or disk, backup of multiple PCs in a single operation, backup to multiple tapes and tape drives, large files support (> 2GB), and data compression. This includes an Explorer-type user interface for easy file selection for backup or restore.

Internet Modem Server: Allows PC users to access a pool of modems on the Unix server(s) to provide Internet access without requiring a separate phone line and modem for each PC.

PC Agent: The FacetWin PC Agent is a graphical user interface providing an important messaging system to allow system administrators and users to quickly and easily communicate with each other. In addition, it allows the user to manage their settings for PC backup, the Internet modem server, and set their default UNIX file permissions.

Email Server: FacetWin includes a POP3 server that allows email to be moved between UNIX and Windows mail systems. This means users can use any POP3 compliant mail client they prefer.

Graphical Administration: Comes with Windows-based administration client including context sensitive help to allow for easy configuration of file and printer sharing, and all other features.
